Local prefect David Claviere stated that the car deliberately drove into pedestrians, and the investigation is ongoing, with detectives from Caen’s Specialised Crime Division leading the probe.
Authorities have launched a major emergency response, with a large area cordoned off near the train station, and locals have been advised to avoid the area.

“For the moment, we are not dealing with a terrorist motive, but the investigation is only just beginning,” said Bruno Coutanceau, a top security official for Caen, adding that all victims appeared to be men between the ages of 17 and 40.
