Maldives President Muizzu Begins Landmark State Visit to Pakistan

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu arrived in Islamabad on Tuesday for a three-day Muizzu Pakistan state visit that both countries are describing as a new chapter in one of South Asia’s quietest partnerships. It is the first time in eleven years that a sitting Maldivian president has travelled to Pakistan, and the packed programme — a state banquet, top-level political talks, a business forum and a dozen expected agreements — suggests the visit is about substance, not ceremony.

Muizzu, accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed and a high-level delegation of cabinet ministers and senior officials, was invited by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. An advance team led by Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam reached Islamabad ahead of the president to finalise preparations.

Muizzu Pakistan state visit: key facts

  • What: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu’s three-day state visit to Pakistan, from 20 to 22 October 2026, at the invitation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
  • Milestone: The first visit by a sitting Maldivian president to Pakistan in 11 years — the last was Abdulla Yameen’s trip in 2015. It coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations, established on 26 July 1966.
  • Meetings: President Asif Ali Zardari will receive Muizzu and host a state banquet in his honour. Muizzu will hold limited and delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Sharif.
  • Expected outcomes: Twelve agreements and memorandums of understanding covering trade and investment, health, education, climate change, tourism, civil aviation and defence cooperation.
  • Business push: A Pakistan-Maldives Business Forum, with around 300 participants, will bring business communities together to explore trade and investment avenues.

What is on the agenda

According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, the two leaders will review the full range of bilateral relations and discuss ways to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, health, education, tourism, agriculture, defence, maritime security and climate change, alongside people-to-people exchanges. The leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments of mutual interest.

The business forum is a central part of the economic agenda. Muizzu and Maldives’ economic development minister are both scheduled to address it, presenting investment opportunities in the island nation to Pakistani business leaders.

Why the visit matters

The timing carries symbolism. The visit lands exactly on the 60th year of diplomatic ties, and the large delegation — including the foreign, defence, home, health and economic development ministers — signals a whole-of-government approach rather than a routine courtesy call.

For Islamabad, the visit adds another channel to its South Asia diplomacy. For Male, agreements on civil aviation, tourism and trade could open practical new links with one of the region’s largest economies.

Whether the dozen expected agreements materialise will be the real measure of the trip. For now, Pakistan has rolled out full state honours for a guest it has not seen at this level in over a decade. More international news from Watan News.
