The European Union’s flagship environment and climate funding programme has set a new EU LIFE funding record: the 2026 call for proposals drew 1,430 applications requesting a combined €4.3 billion in EU funding, according to the announcement published on 13 October 2026. Applications rose 30% compared with 2025, while the funding requested jumped 38% — both new records for the programme.

Key facts

  • 1,430 applications — up 30% from 2025, a new record
  • €4.3 billion requested — up 38% from 2025, a new record
  • 373 proposals target climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • 363 proposals target the clean energy transition
  • The 2026 call envelope: €601.5 million, launched 21 April 2026
  • Evaluation results expected spring 2027; grant agreements in summer 2027

Where the demand came from

The LIFE Programme funds four sub-programmes, and submissions increased across all of them, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) reported:

  • 448 proposals for the circular economy and quality of life sub-programme, aiming to deploy innovative technologies and solutions that advance the circular economy while improving citizens’ daily lives.
  • 373 proposals for climate change mitigation and adaptation, aiming to cut greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen resilience to the impacts of climate change.
  • 363 proposals for the clean energy transition, supporting energy efficiency, renewable energy uptake and affordable, sustainable energy across Europe.
  • 246 proposals for nature and biodiversity, contributing to the protection and restoration of Europe’s nature and to halting and reversing biodiversity loss.

Why the EU LIFE funding record matters

The record demand signals how strongly organisations across Europe are reaching for climate and environment funding. LIFE is the EU’s funding instrument for environment and climate action, with a budget of more than €5.4 billion for 2021–2027, and it has co-funded around 6,500 projects since its inception almost 35 years ago. The work programme for 2025–2027 set an overall budget of €2.3 billion for projects tackling circular economy, zero pollution, nature and biodiversity, climate mitigation and adaptation, and the clean energy transition.

Applications can be submitted by a single organisation or by several entities working together — but not by individuals — and may cover one or more EU Member States or countries associated with the LIFE Programme. The agency states that projects must support EU objectives to strengthen competitiveness, close the innovation gap and decarbonise the economy, and should align with European nature, climate, environmental protection and clean energy transition policies. Each proposal is evaluated independently.

What happens next

CINEA, the EU Executive Agency managing the programme, will notify applicants of the evaluation results in spring 2027. Successful applicants will sign grant agreements in summer 2027 and begin work later that year. For the hundreds of organisations behind the record 1,430 proposals, the wait begins now — and for Europe’s climate-action pipeline, the pipeline of funded projects for 2027 is about to take shape.
