Iran Faces Widening Insurgency as Attacks Escalate in Sistan-Baluchistan
Share this story

The Iran insurgency in the country’s southeast is widening as armed groups intensify shootings, bombings and ambushes against security forces in Sistan-Baluchistan province. The recent string of attacks, centered on the border districts near Pakistan and Afghanistan, has killed police officers, Revolutionary Guard members and local commanders, compounding one of Tehran’s most persistent internal security crises at a time of heavy external pressure.

FAKTA

  • Two separate attacks in Mehrestan district on October 14 killed a commander of the Basij women’s unit and a police officer.
  • An IRGC raid in the Kourin area of Zahedan broke up a kidnapping cell linked to Jaish al-Adl; six militants and one Revolutionary Guard serviceman died, and a kidnapped engineer was freed.
  • At least eight Iranian security-force members have been killed in Sistan-Baluchistan in the past three weeks, according to state media.
  • Sistan-Baluchistan, home to the strategic Chabahar port, borders both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
  • Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group behind repeated attacks on Iranian forces, is designated a terrorist organization by both Iran and the United States.

Iran Insurgency Intensifies Across Sistan-Baluchistan

Wednesday’s killings in Mehrestan underline how quickly the violence is spreading. Iranian reports said gunmen shot a commander of a local Basij women’s unit outside her home, while a separate strike on a police vehicle in the same district killed another officer. The Basij paramilitary operates under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Days earlier, the IRGC said it had raided a militant hideout in Kourin, near the provincial capital Zahedan, after a construction engineer was abducted and was reportedly being moved toward the border. Five members of the kidnapping cell were killed in the assault and another died in continued fighting; one IRGC serviceman also lost his life and the engineer was rescued. Semi-official media linked the cell to Jaish al-Adl. Separately, the official IRNA agency reported an attack on a minibus carrying security personnel along the Makran coast that killed one and wounded three, plus a deadly strike on a police patrol convoy.

Why Sistan-Baluchistan Is a Security Flashpoint

Sistan-Baluchistan is Iran’s poorest province, populated mainly by Sunni Baluch communities, and its porous borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan have made it a corridor for militants and weapons. Armed groups have carried out checkpoint assaults, roadside bombings and targeted killings of officers for years; analysts say separatist and Islamist factions are now cooperating more closely, raising the pressure on Tehran. Iranian authorities have answered with heavier raids and a stronger military presence in the province.

The internal escalation comes as Iran stays on high alert amid threats from Washington of renewed strikes. US President Donald Trump has said the United States may act against Iran before November’s midterm elections, while Iran’s army chief said last week that the war had not ended and the armed forces would keep their readiness.
