According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Finance Ministry, the discussions reviewed cooperation on the country’s digital economy. Aurangzeb appreciated Alibaba’s support for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), local brands and Pakistani exporters through Daraz and Alibaba.com — two platforms that have become central to the country’s online retail ecosystem.

The finance minister invited Alibaba to submit proposals for rationalising e-commerce taxation, stressing the need to balance fairness with broader participation in the tax system. The talks also covered ways to speed up the Pakistan Single Window e-commerce platform and improve the tracking of cross-border payments and export proceeds.

Digital payments and a cashless future

A key theme of the meeting was Pakistan’s move toward a cashless economy. Both sides discussed digital payment systems and the transparent delivery of social protection payments and targeted subsidies, so that government support reaches the right beneficiaries efficiently.

The push fits into a wider economic agenda. On the same Bangkok trip, Aurangzeb also met International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation (ITFC) chief executive Engineer Adeeb Y. Al Aama, highlighting Pakistan’s economic progress, stronger foreign exchange reserves and renewed access to international capital markets.

AI, cloud and modernising the post office

Beyond payments, the two sides reviewed cooperation on cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence and tax administration, with particular emphasis on integrated data systems, cybersecurity and institutional capacity.

In a notable logistics angle, the discussions explored modernising Pakistan Post’s mail-sorting systems and expanding agricultural exports to China through Alibaba’s retail network — potentially opening new international markets for Pakistani producers.

With proposals invited on e-commerce taxation, the Single Window platform being accelerated, and cooperation spanning payments, AI and logistics, the Pakistan Alibaba digital economy dialogue could shape how millions of Pakistani businesses trade in the years ahead.
