Netflix has released “Schumacher ’94 — The Birth of a Legend,” a new feature documentary about Michael Schumacher’s dramatic first Formula 1 world championship season, streaming worldwide from October 2, 2026. The film’s most talked-about element is a rare, personal interview with the racing legend’s wife, Corinna Schumacher, who has guarded the family’s privacy closely for more than a decade.

FAKTA: Schumacher ’94 — The Birth of a Legend

  • What: Feature documentary about Michael Schumacher’s 1994 Formula 1 title season
  • Release: Worldwide on Netflix, October 2, 2026
  • Length: About 105 minutes (1 hour 45 minutes)
  • Directed by: Christin Freitag, produced by Leonine Documentaries
  • Key interviewees: Corinna Schumacher, Flavio Briatore, Willi Weber, Pat Symonds, Bernie Ecclestone, David Coulthard, Kai Ebel
  • Rating: TV-14

A single season of triumph and tragedy

The documentary stays entirely inside the 1994 season — from Brazil to Adelaide — rather than retelling Schumacher’s whole career. Schumacher was 25, driving for Benetton, and won the first four races of the year while his great rival Ayrton Senna chased him and spun out in Brazil. Then came Imola.

The film devotes a substantial portion of its runtime to that dark weekend: Roland Ratzenberger was killed in qualifying, and Ayrton Senna died the following day at the Tamburello corner — with Schumacher’s car right behind him. Schumacher won the race. Archival audio featured in the film captures him saying he felt “completely empty” afterwards and that he saw places on that circuit “where you can die.”

The title was decided at the final race in Adelaide, where Schumacher beat Damon Hill by a single point — one of the narrowest and most debated margins in Formula 1 history.

Corinna Schumacher speaks

For more than a decade since Michael Schumacher’s skiing accident in 2013, the family has kept his private life strictly out of public view. The new film changes that in a measured way: Corinna Schumacher appears on camera with intimate recollections, including her mother’s early opposition to the relationship, small observations from race days, the couple’s song “Rush Rush” and light-hearted anecdotes about fans.

In a preview clip circulated by German media ahead of the release, she describes how she was “unconditionally there” for her husband — unusually personal testimony from a woman who has rarely spoken publicly.

New voices, no Michael interview

Michael Schumacher himself does not give an interview; he appears only through archive footage from the 1994 season. Damon Hill likewise appears only in archive clips, according to early German reviews, and does not sit for a new interview. The fresh testimony comes from the people around Schumacher: team boss Flavio Briatore, longtime manager Willi Weber — who financed the young Schumacher’s early racing career — engineer Pat Symonds, Bernie Ecclestone, former driver David Coulthard, reporter Kai Ebel and commentator Heiko Waßer.

This is a different film from Netflix’s 2021 documentary “Schumacher,” which was a career-spanning retrospective. “Schumacher ’94” is tighter and more intimate: twelve months that made a legend and, in Weber’s telling — “Nach Imola war Michael anders” (“After Imola, Michael was different”) — nearly broke the man.

One of twelve Netflix documentaries this October

The film arrives as part of a busy October for non-fiction on the streaming service: Netflix is adding twelve documentaries this month, led by five profiling beloved comedy figures — including Saturday Night Live star Norm Macdonald and Friends icon Matthew Perry — plus sports documentaries on Schumacher and heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, whose four-part series “TYSON” premieres October 13, 2026.

Conclusion

“Schumacher ’94 — The Birth of a Legend” promises to reopen one of Formula 1’s most argued-over seasons — and to renew public conversation about Schumacher himself, both the sporting and cultural impact of his 1994 title and his life in the years since the 2013 accident. With Corinna Schumacher speaking on camera and a season’s worth of rare archive footage, the film gives fans and newcomers a single-season time capsule of the year a prodigy became a champion.
