Cavan Sullivan has written his name into United States soccer history. At just 17 years and five days old, the Philadelphia Union forward became the youngest scorer in US men’s national team history, lofting a stunning 62nd-minute chip over Mexico goalkeeper José Rangel as the USA cruised to a 3-0 friendly victory over Mexico on Saturday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Sullivan’s record-breaking chip
The historic moment came midway through the second half. With the USA already leading through fellow teenager Julian Hall, Sullivan pounced on a careless pass from José Rangel, took a touch, and lofted a long-range shot over the stranded goalkeeper’s head to double the lead. He sprinted to the corner flag, where he was mobbed by his teammates.
“This is what you dream of,” Sullivan said afterwards. “I’ve manifested this not just these past couple of days, but my whole life. This is a special moment for me and my family.” He later called it the “biggest pinch-me moment ever,” saying he had dreamed of it “since you’re three, four, five, six years old.”
It was Sullivan’s third international appearance, and he had made his debut only the week before — the youngest US starter since Freddy Adu in 2006. Coach Mauricio Pochettino gave him a big hug when he was substituted a few minutes later. “He’s a fighter, he’s a warrior,” Pochettino said. “It’s difficult to find this type of player. Tremendous quality.”
Hall keeps scoring
The night’s first goal belonged to another teenager. In the 28th minute, Gio Reyna’s crossing pass deflected off Rangel’s foot and fell kindly for the 18-year-old Julian Hall, who blasted it home at close range with his right foot. It was Hall’s third international goal in three games, following strikes against Peru and Chile the previous week.
Hall, who plays for the New York Red Bulls, became only the third player in USMNT history to score in each of his first three appearances, after Eddie Johnson (2004–05) and Alexander Rae (1937). The first-half goal also marked the first time in team history that the United States has scored in the first half of ten consecutive games.

Chávez sent off, Tillman seals it
Mexico’s night unravelled in the 67th minute. Mateo Chávez committed a hard foul on Yunus Musah and then smacked Sebastian Berhalter in the face with both hands when the US midfielder confronted him. The referee showed a straight red card, leaving El Tri down to ten men for the final 20-plus minutes.
The United States punished the advantage in the 84th minute, when Malik Tillman found the top-left corner to complete the 3-0 scoreline — the 80th meeting between the CONCACAF rivals ending in a comprehensive American win.

Márquez still waiting for first win
The defeat intensifies the pressure on Mexico coach Rafael Márquez, who took over on July 8, 2026, and is still seeking his first win after three matches in charge. After 1-1 draws against Colombia and Peru, Saturday’s 3-0 loss in Glendale means his record now stands at two draws and one defeat.
Márquez, the former Tri captain who served as Javier Aguirre’s assistant through the 2026 World Cup, had made his managerial debut in a 1-1 draw with Colombia in Baltimore. The friendly window continues for both teams, but El Tri’s new era is off to a difficult start.
Youngest USMNT scorers: how the record fell
Sullivan’s goal is the third rewriting of this record in a decade — and the second in one week:
| Player | Age at goal | Date | Match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian Pulisic | 17 years, 253 days | May 28, 2016 | vs Bolivia |
| Mathis Albert | 17 years, 131 days | Sept 29, 2026 | vs Chile (4-2 win) |
| Cavan Sullivan | 17 years, 5 days | Oct 3, 2026 | vs Mexico (3-0 win) |
A night that belonged to the kids
Sullivan’s record-breaking chip crowned a landmark evening for the new generation of American soccer. With Hall’s hot streak continuing, Tillman on the scoresheet and Pochettino’s youngest side in years dismantling its biggest rival, the United States sent a powerful statement about its depth and its future.
Sullivan, widely regarded as one of the most promising young talents in US soccer, is set to join Manchester City next year. On this evidence, the move to one of Europe’s elite clubs cannot come soon enough. For more USMNT and world football coverage, visit our Sports section.
